Question by Miss J: What is “Homeowners Emergency Assessment” coverage cover on homeowners policies in the state of Fl?
I recently got some comparison quotes on homeowners insurance, and added to just the one company is listed “Homeowners Emergency Assessment”. It cannot become effective until after 12/15/08. No agent I’ve asked seems to know what this coverage is. Does anyone know?
Correction….it is name as “Citizens Emergency Assessment:. NOT Homeowners Emergency Assessment”

Some areas, you are charged a fire department service call, or 911 charge, if you request public emergency assistance (like having the fire trucks roll out). Normally, it’s part of the costs of a fire claim, but if you call the fire department to, say, get your cat out of a tree, they’ll bill you.
So that covers the service charge.
Double check with your agent, who gave you the quote, to be sure.

Florida has a state owned property insurance company called Citizens Property Insurance Company. It provides property coverage to Floridians who have been rejected by private insurers (insurers of last resort if you will). Therefore this insurer tends to insure properties in high risk areas, therefore in years with high claims, usually due to hurricanes the state will assign a special charge on all property policies insurance policies. The money collected from this is used to keep Citizen’s solvent. If they did not do this then Citizens would have to be bailed out by the State or it would quickly go bankrupt, leaving several thousand properties uninsured.
